Glossary (terms for counselling)


This basic counselling glossary is to help with terms and concepts used in counselling, such as 'active listening', 'empathy', and 'confidentiality'. 


Counselling terms


Active listening: A technique that involves focusing on the speaker and being present to listen. 


Empathy: The ability to understand a client's thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. 


Confidentiality: A principle of counselling that involves keeping a client's information private. 


Acceptance: A principle of counselling that involves accepting a client's condition. 


Non-judgment: A principle of counselling that involves treating a client with respect and dignity. 


Respect: A principle of counselling that involves treating a client with respect and dignity. 


Validating statements: Statements that acknowledge a client's feelings and experiences. 


Questioning: The ability to ask questions to help clients feel heard


Interpretation: The ability to interpret information


Trustworthiness: The ability to be trustworthy


Mutual goal directness: The idea that counselling should be directed towards achieving specific goals 


Open communication: The idea that counselling should involve open and effective communication.
